This is not a “how to” book. The book is a collection of memories of Issy’s experience of living with someone who has been diagnosed with Alzheimers dementia. Issy has encountered Alzheimer’s in her family twice, once with my grandmother and then with my Mum.
- Her first experience of knowing someone with Alzheimer’s was when she was a 12 years old child and her Grandmother came to live with her family. This part of the book is unique because it seeing dementia from the perspective of a child.
- Issy describes her desire to become a nurse. Again this is unique from a child’s view of nursing.
- The book includes black humour, typical of that told by a nurse.
- Issy cared for her Mother who had Alzheimers during the Covid pandemic, this added layers of complexities.
- The book highlights how emotional intelligence and going with the flow can work in the favour of the carer, whilst caring for a relative with dementia.
- It’s a book that delves into the depths of despair but it’s also a book of laughter and reflection and will cause the reader to ‘Laugh out Loud’. There are many precious memories and funny stories that a stand-up comedian would relish.
- The story is not always politically correct, but it is real. It captures the realities of a family learning together of how best to adapt to cope with living with a relative who has dementia.
- It is a story of contrast, of a loved one dying at home which was strangely gratifying, whereas a loved one dying where any control has been taken away leads to long lasting consequences for the relatives left behind.
- It touches on some local dialect and social cultures.
- It includes nature and animals, particularly my horses and dressage.
